In K-pop, visuals are still measured against tough Korean beauty standards. Like, clear “glass skin”, slim proportions, symmetry, and an overall polished image.
The issue even reached public debate. When MOGEF in South Korea sparked a major national debate in February 2019. They issued guidelines that many K-pop idols and TV stars had become “look-alikes.”
1. Hwasa (MAMAMOO)
Hwasa remains one of the clearest examples of an idol who pushed back against beauty norms. Fans always criticized Hwasa MAMAMOO for her tan skin, curvier figure, and bold styling. But now her weight loss and improved skin color makes her more popular among netizens.
2. RM (BTS)
RM has long been part of wider fan conversations. He faced critics for visuals, especially during BTS’s early years. But the RM BTS visual discussion has shifted over time. He became popular for charisma, fashion, and rapping.
3. Jeongyeon (TWICE)
Jeongyeon was often set against softer girl-group beauty trends. Still, her fierce gaze, strong features, and weight became central to Twice’s identity.
4. J-Hope (BTS)
J-Hope has faced his share of visual criticism in early BTS years. But most fans got attracted towards his expressiveness and explosive stage presence.
5. Chaeryeong (ITZY)
Chaeryeong has also faced criticism for not fitting traditional Korean beauty standards. Netizens often label her a “visual hole” compared to her fellow members.
6. Daesung (BIGBANG)
Daesung was frequently mentioned in older K-pop forum. The debate circulates around his nontraditional visuals. Even so, his vocals, humor, and variety sense made him beloved beyond those critics and judgment.
7. Jihyo (TWICE)
Jihyo of TWICE has frequently been targeted for her appearance. She faced backlash from certain online communities for her assertive personality. Soon, fans start admiring her for rich tone and distinct aura.
8. Mino (WINNER)
Early on Mino was judged unfairly for sharper, less conventional visuals. Later, those same features became part of his fashion-forward image and artistic identity.
9. S. Coups (SEVENTEEN)
He is often targeted by trolls for his prominent features and deep-set eyes. Therefore he faced harsh comparisons with his more conventionally styled groupmates.
10. Changbin (Stray Kids)
Changbin sometimes comes up in online debates about idol visuals. But fans usually point to his intensity, confidence, and performance power first.
